In this process, the required amount of pigment is charged in the Attritor/Ball Mill with the suitable quantity of resin and solvent along with dispersing, wetting, and anti-settling additives. The pigment particles are crushed within 2 steatite balls of 8 mm size by shearing action or in 37 to 50 mm pebbles in a ball mill. The time of dispersion in the attritor is 3 hours & and 16 hours overnight in the ball mill.
The material in the machine is known as Mil Base where the soft pigment takes less time compared to hard pigment.
Once the finish reaches 5+ the mill base is discharged in an open mouth barrel. Here the instrument used to check the finish is known as the Hegman Guage.
It is the 2nd step after dispersion. The remainder of resin as per formulation is added in the thinning tank along with the mill base if the batch size is 100 Ltr – 200 Ltrs it is mixed with Hand Stirrer and if the batch size is 500 Ltrs/1000Ltrs/1500Ltrs/3000Ltrs/7500Ltrs/15000 Ltrs the mill base is added in the required thinning tank of different capacity.
After the addition of resin the mill base is further thinned as per formulation with solvents which are generally Mineral Turpentine. The addition of other additives such as driers, cobalt, lead, manganese, and calcium is done during the thinning stage, and viscosity / Gloss is adjusted.
The formulation is completed up to 80 to 90% depending upon the closeness of shade. The tinter applies the panel with the previous standard batch and compares the Gloss, hiding, and shade, of the material.
The paint is filtered through fine muslin cloth in an open tank, having a tap or cock at the bottom. The material is packed in 20 ltr M.S. drums which are already cleaned, painted, and screened earlier with details such as type of paint, customers, name Batch Number, etc. The material is packed by weight after multiplying 20 ltr with wt/per ltr of paint. The drums are sealed with an inner M.S. Plug and the outer Tin Capseal is put in for further protection. The finished goods are then stored in the warehouse (Bonded store room)
